Learning Inside and Outside the Classroom
Courses at Salzburg College are taught in English by European professors.
There is no language requirement for the program.
Excursions, guest lectures, and interaction with local professionals in their field constitute important aspects of virtually every course. You are encouraged to add your own creative dimensions as you explore course-related topics during your independent travel. Here are some examples of field experiences related to specific classes:
- Students of Economics and Politics meet with experts on European integration.
- The Business courses feature weekly guest speakers and field trips to European companies.
- European History students visit local historical sites, including the concentration camps of Dachau and Mauthausen.
- The Public Relations course includes field trips to PR offices and companies and features practitioners in the field as guest speakers.
Music History includes the attendance of concert and opera performances.
- Art History classes take field trips to museums and architectural monuments.
- Studio Art and Music Performance students work with local artists, attend show openings in Salzburg and give recitals.
- Intercultural Communication draws on the daily acculturation process in the Austrian environment, especially with the host families.
- There are opportunities for Business Internships, Museum Internships, and Artist Apprenticeships
- And finally, all students have a "live German language lab" courtesy of their Austrian host families.
While all courses at Salzburg College are basically open to all students, certain areas of concentration have been developed. They include specialized field trips and other professional opportunities.

“European Economics and Politics was the BEST CLASS EVER! I know more about Europe’s government and history than I know about America’s. The professor is so amazing because he involves the class so much, always asking us questions about what we think or what we would do.”

“The US/European Relations class did a great job of allowing us to see the US and the world from a European perspective. The professor brought a very unique perspective to the class and I enjoyed it because he covered different aspects than in all my previous history classes.”
-- Emily Jones, Hardin-Simmons University
“I love that Music History is not just about dry knowledge, but we go to concerts and the professor plays the flute/piano/CD in class so we can try to understand it. Everything is set in a rich historical context making it easy to link to other classes like Art and Austrian Civilization to get a complete understanding.”
