Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I take studio art classes even if I am not an art major?
A: You can take a studio art class if you have taken an introductory course. Ideally, it should be college level Beginning Drawing, but exceptions can be discussed with the instructor.

Q: Can I take a class that is not in the major I am enrolled in?
A: You can take any course that is offered at Salzburg College, with the exception of classes where specific prerequisites are listed. In fact, we encourage you to enroll in a class that is NOT in your major field of study.

Q: Can I do a Business Internship even if I have not studied German before?
A: Several of the companies that accept Salzburg College students for an internship conduct part of their business in English. Other companies require a good command of German. Therefore the options for students with very limited German are more limited and cannot be guaranteed in advance. If students have not studied German and make their decision to study in Salzburg before the beginning of the fall semester, they are encouraged to take a German class in preparation. A pre-requisite for participation in the internship program is computer literacy and previous professional work or internship experience.

Q: Do I have to register for the internship at the beginning of the semester or can I do this later when I see what it's like?
A: Since arrangements for business internships must be made at a very early date, you need to sign up for the internship at the time of registration. You may later decide not to do the internship, but it cannot be added at a later date.

Q: How does the class schedule work. Are Fridays off? Could I see course times/days before registering so I could try to schedule mostly Tuesday/Thursday classes or non-Friday classes for travel purposes?
A: The schedule at Salzburg College does not follow the typical Tuesday-Thursday or Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule that is the norm at American universities. Rather, the schedule is arranged around the students' needs. We try to avoid class conflicts, so that all students can take the classes they want to attend. Classes are held Monday through Friday (there are no late afternoon classes on Fridays). You have plenty of time to travel during the two week mid-semester break. Also, many destinations can still be easily reached on Friday afternoon for a weekend visit. Or you may take a night train and save the cost of an overnight stay!

Q: Will living with a host family "cramp my style"?
A: Although living in a host family requires a certain degree of time management and consideration for the family's schedule, students have never complained about restrictions posed upon them. Families will take an interest in your daily life, yet respect your privacy. You will receive a key to your family's house or apartment to allow access at any time.

Q: How far away from the College are the host families?
A: They are located in all parts of the city. The city bus system is fast and convenient for your commute to the centrally-located study center. On average it takes about 15-20 minutes to reach the College from anywhere in Salzburg. In warmer weather, many students rent bikes and use the extensive network of bike paths throughout the city for their commute.

Q: Do you have dorms at Salzburg College?
A: No, we do not. If you wish to live in an alternate housing situation, we pick a suitable place after corresponding with you about your preferences. Your housing may be in one of the student dorms for Austrian and international students in the city (very limited spaces), or in an efficiency apartment.

Q: Can vegetarians survive in Austria?
A: Yes, indeed. Throughout the years our cook, Brigitte, and our host families have successfully produced a variety of vegetarian dishes. No complaints, so far.

Q: Do you have sports facilities at the College?
A: No, we do not. However, Salzburg College students may enroll in sport courses offered to all students through the Physical Education department at the University of Salzburg. Sports offered include basketball, rock climbing, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, fencing, dancing, etc.

Q: How far away is the train station from the College?
A: 10 minutes by city bus from the College, 20 minutes on foot.

Q: Do you have email addresses of former SC students available?
A: Just write us and we will send you a list of e-mail addresses of former students. They would be happy to answer all your questions about Salzburg College.

Q: Should I bring prescription drugs with me for pre-existing illnesses or can I have them mailed to me?
A: By all means, do bring your prescription drugs with you. Sending them by mail can be complicated, since customs officials usually require confirmation by your physician that you need this particular medication. Without a confirmation you may not be able to import them. Some American medications may be available in Austria under a different label. Please inform us ahead of time if you have a medical problem and if you need medical care while in Salzburg. We have excellent, experienced and English-speaking physicians who have helped many students over the years.

Q: Can I bring my cat with me?
A: No!

Q: Can I bring my bicycle/skis on the chartered group bus?
A: Bicycles cannot be transported on the bus that meets you in Frankfurt since they take up too much space. Please have them shipped to Salzburg College, Ursulinenplatz 4, A-5020 Salzburg, Austria, Europe. If you are bringing skis, please contact the Salzburg College office for best mode of transportation. Do not expect to bring them on the bus.
